RHS PE STAFF

The Physical Education Department aims to provide students with opportunities to develop an optimal level of physical fitness through psychomotor development activities, cardiovascular endurance/flexibility/strength training, and wellness education. Health-related activities are an integral part of the program at all levels. The emphasis in activities is to provide an awareness of the importance of daily exercise, social skills, sportsmanship, and the enjoyment of physical activity throughout a lifetime. Health-related fitness tests are administered each quarter to all students to better assess student progress.

    • A =  100-90%
    • B =  89-80%
    • C =  79-70%
    • NC = <70%
  • Physical Education requires regular attendance and participation. Excessive absences, lack of participation, and Medical excuses will directly affect your daily participation points. If a student is unable to participate (absent, injured, not dressed appropriately, etc), they will not earn daily participation points.
  • All PE Classes are graded:
    • The grade includes active participation in daily activities, dressing out, fitness testing, and assessments (cardiovascular, written, and skills assessment). Students may earn up to 10 participation points a day.
  • Semester Grades:
    • Students must earn a 70% or above to earn credit for the semester.
  • Reasons Students may not earn full daily participation points:
    • If your student is not dressed in appropriate Physical Education clothes (Non-Suit), they may not be able to earn the maximum daily participation points.
    • Clothes worn to school cannot be used for P.E. and will result in a non-suit. (This includes “game day” or "warm-up" attire for athletes.)
    • Not wearing the complete Physical Education uniform (Incomplete Uniform) may affect your students' daily participation points, for example, black shorts or a green shirt.
    • Not participating to the expected level for each activity during class will affect daily participation points.
    • Not participating in the entire class period will affect the student's daily grade.
    • Tardiness will affect the student's ability to earn full participation points.
    • Each absence will affect daily participation points.
    • Illness/Injury that prevents participation in class activities
    • Misconduct (M)- any unacceptable behavior defined by the RHS code of conduct will result in the loss of participation points for the day.
    • Students fail to earn credit in Physical Education mainly due to absences from class, failure to dress for the activity, and lack of participation.
  • How students can MAKE-UP participation points:
    • Flex Period Make-ups (See Flex Period  PE Make-Ups)
    • Students are encouraged to make up any participation points missed due to absence/illness/injury etc
    • Students can earn make-ups BEFORE any planned absences

Flex Period PE Make-ups

General Information for PE Make-ups: Activities will include general fitness activities at the teacher's discretion. Any medical limitations will apply to make-up activities, but students must inform the supervising teacher.
  • Participation requires proper PE attire and sign-in
  • Participation make-ups are offered Tuesdays through Fridays during Flex time. Participants must meet at the designated location by 10:25, dressed and ready to participate.
  • Students arriving late will not be able to earn credit.
  • Successful completion of one 25-minute make-up will earn up to 5 points.
  • Specific Assignment make-ups can be completed by appointment with your teacher or during Flex time.                (ex. Written tests, skills tests, lab activities…)
  • Students who miss class due to AP exams and athletic events are required to notify their teacher ahead of time (one class period). These students are responsible for any assignment or assessment missed but are not required to make up for daily participation.
  • Students may be assigned to Flex time at the discretion of their teacher.
  • Students may "bank" points by completing make-ups before they are needed. For example, if a student is going to be absent, they can complete make-ups before they miss school.

There are NO MAKE-UPS BEFORE or AFTER SCHOOL.

PE Uniform:

PE Clothes are always on sale:
  • T-shirt (gray) - $15
  • Shorts (royal blue) - $15
  • Payment collected at the Student Store
  • Bring the receipt to the PE Dept. to pick  up PE Clothes
Each student will be expected to participate in the physical education program wearing a complete set of “marked” regulation gym clothes.

 Required Shorts:
    • Royal blue gym shorts can be purchased through RHS ($15.00) or students can provide their own as long as they are Plain Royal blue.
    • SHORT SHORTS (i.e., "soffe" are inappropriate for P.E.)
  • Required Shirts:
    • Grey T-shirts can be purchased through RHS ($15.00), or students can provide their own as long as they are plain (no logos, etc.). Gray shirts issued by RHS teams/clubs are acceptable.

    • Cross Training//Running type shoes are appropriate for physical activity.  Shoes should have laces that can be tied.
    • Athletic "SPIRIT PACKS" may be worn IF they comply with the above requirements (gray shirt, blue shorts).

  • Some classes may require a uniform unique to their class activity. Ex..Freshmen Swimming Unit: A swimsuit (does not need to be blue), swim caps, and goggles are recommended but not required.
  • All uniforms must be marked with the student’s last name using a permanent marker within the first week of class. Lost uniforms cannot be reclaimed unless a name is clearly marked on them.

There will be no "loaner" PE clothes. Students are responsible for having the appropriate
P.E. Uniform for class each day.

Locker Room

  • PE Locks:
    • Each student will be given a Master Lock at the start of the year to ensure they can keep their stuff safe in class.
    • A lost lock will cost $10 to replace
  • Every Rocklin High School PE student has access to a locker. The lockers can store PE clothes, shoes, personal hygiene products, etc.
  • Lockers must have an RHS-issued lock.
  • Students are directed to LOCK UP their belongings.
  • Students also have access to "big" lockers for use during their class period.
  • These lockers are large enough to store backpacks, school clothes etc.
  • Unsecured belongings are susceptible to theft—it is the student's responsibility to secure their stuff.

Students leaving early/arriving late need to plan ahead:  Locker rooms will NOT be available during class time.  They can bring their belongings with them to class (leaving early) or make sure they have them if they are arriving late.  Campus bathrooms can be utilitzed as necessary.

FAQs

1Writing a note: If your student needs to be excused for PE, please send a note on the day you would like them excused.  Our goal is to keep students engaged whenever possible/appropriate. Please include specific information so we can MODIFY the activity to keep your student involved whenever possible. Notes should include the student's first and last name, date, reason, parent signature, and contact information. Students who cannot earn participation points by completing the daily activities will be encouraged to attend and participate in Flex time to earn missed points.
2.  When my student brings a note to be excused from PE, does he/she still need to dress out?
YES! Students not participating in P.E. due to a parent note are REQUIRED to dress in P.E. uniform (unless physically unable to)  and join in a modified activity (when appropriate). If they are unable to participate in the activities, they may earn their points when they are healthy enough to do so during the Plus Period   (See Flex Period PE Make-Ups)

3.  Does my student "lose points" with a doctor's note?
Students who are not able to participate will not earn daily participation points. IF activities can be modified appropriately and safely with direction from the Physician, students may be able to gain partial to full credit. Students missing participation have the opportunity to earn any points missed during Flex Period (see Flex Period PE Make-Ups)

3.  Are black shirts/shorts okay?
NO: PE Shorts must be Royal Blue, and shirts must be Gray.

4. What kind of shorts do we need?
RHS PE requires that students wear shorts of appropriate length- think basketball or soccer style shorts.  "Short" shorts may not appropriate for all actvities

5. What about sweatshirts or pants?
Students may wear them IF they are blue/gray.

6.  If my student loses points, can they earn them back?
YES! Students may earn back points lost due to lack of participation, fitness, non-suits, absences, etc, by participating in correctives offered during any Flex period.

7. Will my student lose points when they are absent?
Physical Education is rooted in participation. Students who are absent will not earn daily participation points. They will be encouraged to attend correctives during Flex time. Any missed assessments or written assignments will also need to be made up.

8. Does a student athlete lose points when they miss class due to an RHS Athletic event?
RHS Athletes will be excused from daily participation if they are missing more than 30 minutes of the class period.. Athletes MUST communicate beforehand (preferably one class period before their absence) each time they miss class or leave early. They will be held accountable for any assignment or test they miss—they will not need to make up "participation" points.

9. Any health issues that may affect the student’s participation in P.E. activities must be documented by a Physician and on file with the School Health Office and the P.E. Teacher before activity begins.(i.e., asthma, OSD, scoliosis, IBS, …)
Forms are available on the "Medical Questions" tab.

 10.  Do students exercise outside when the air quality is bad?
RHS PE staff monitors the AQI (http://sparetheair.com/aqirealtime.cfm) and will modify the curriculum according to district policy. Depending on the time of day and activity, some classes are more affected than others.

 11.  Do students exercise outside in excessive heat?
RHS PE staff monitors the outside temperature and will modify the curriculum according to district policy. Some classes are affected more than others, depending on the time of day and activity.
